El Quillay, Organic VOE , House of Morandé and RE Wineries

We will drive north –west of Santiago one hour to “ El Quillay “ a Chilean typical Stop at the Curacaví valley in order to see  how they make and try one of the most typical dishes of Chile, Empanadas, the best ones of our country are made there with the old fashion way, in adobe ovens. You will have an exclusive outdoors tasting along this great dish. Then we will continue the Casablanca Valley to visit the organic winery, Viña VOE, ever since Viñedos Emiliana began in 1986; one of its primary concerns has been the care and management of the land. This is essential for complying with the basic Emiliana premise: “Quality begins in the vineyard.” Viñedos Emiliana employs this philosophy, technology, and its many years of experience to produce high quality fruit with minimum impact on the environment, which leads it to follow the concepts of Emiliana. Under the Organic concept, the vineyard is considered to be a living resource, with an own balance that must be preserved. Because of this, the ground nutrients are generated in the same field. The Emiliana Organic spirit is sustained in the caring and absolute dedication for the vineyard and the strong commitment for the environment, achieving like this the maximum Terroir expression, preserving all the grape’s peculiarities and obtaining a result of extraordinary quality. Emiliana Vineyards invites you to a unique and unforgettable experience where you will enjoy the beautiful and natural surroundings of our gardens and organic vineyard. Additionally, they invite you to participate in the tasting of their internationally recognized and award winning premier red and white organic wines.

Then we will continue our journey to the winery House of Morandé, founded in 1996 with the aim of producing innovative wines of a great quality with a clear focus of the development. In order to receive the lovers of wine and good eating Viña Morandé open a gastronomic centre, the restaurant offers first class cuisine accompanied by their best wines. It is the perfect place to do our wine pairings. The restaurant was recently awarded the prize for the best restaurant outside the capital by the newspaper, El Mercurio, through its “Wiken” magazine, the building is a glass-and-wood indoor dining area, and pleasant patio dining overlooking a grassy expanse and grapevines. The well-balanced menu features lots of seafood. we will try their wine varieties over lunch. Then we will continue to Bodegas RE to see how the man is using modernity and technology to look back to ancestry, to nature and the earth Like Pablo Morandé (pioneered in wine production in Casablanca Valley), said, “In my winery, these tanks [concrete pods], similar to primitive ones, are a search for history and beauty. However, they have all the tools of a modern tank. Apart from looking for a beautiful, good, natural wine, there is the concept that things can be done in a simple form – almost watching the wine being made. They did it 6,000 years ago; I'm just putting it into the context of the 21st century, still respecting what they did then. This is what our wine RE is all about”. We will taste their wines and then we will continue to Millahue to try our traditions and food ending up back in your hotel in Santiago.

PREMIUM COLCHAGUA VALLEY
Clos de Apalta, Montes and Apaltagua wineries

We are going to drive South of Santiago to visit our first winery Viña Montes, their property the "La Finca de Apalta" is located in the middle of the renowned Apalta Valley. In this isolated area, The River Tinguiririca becomes a natural barrier. On the northern end, an elevated mountain range filters the soft ocean breeze, a key factor of the weather quality in Apalta. This area is set in a semicircle with steep 45º slopes, with plantations slanting south allowing for a soft exposure angle to the sun. On the gradient, temperatures decrease, which play a role on the slow yet full grape maturity. This property produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Carmenère, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Mouvedre.

The soils are characterized by a significant presence of granodioritic rock that has a very low capacity for retaining water, which makes the hillsides the ideal place to grow grapes. In general the Apalta climate is more temperate than the rest of the Colchagua Valley due to the Pacific breezes that enter and remain in the valley. The considerable temperature difference between the hillsides and flat sections allows for slow and full ripening processes for the grapes. The rigorous management plan that we use in our vineyards throughout the year allows us to obtain the highest quality grapes. Expert hands dedicate a great deal of time and care to each sector of the vineyards in order to achieve optimum quality grapes beginning in March of every year. The final product is 100% handpicked.

Viña Montes invites you to leave the world behind and experience a unique and unforgettable tour through vegetation that is typical of central Chile on a nature path complete with panoramic vistas. While out in the vineyards you can enjoy a view of the steep hillsides (with a more than 45-degree incline) and natural environment that is representative of central Chile where they produce the best grapes for their Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly and Purple Angel wines. Inside the “bodega” you can observe the gravitational system that they use to move the wines, their tours offer an opportunity to learn more about terroir by tasting a fine selection of their wines and visiting the winery and vineyards then we will continue to a unique experience in gastronomy, developed by out talented team of Chilean chefs. Their philosophy rests on the freshness of seasonal ingredients. They want to bring out the flavors of the region by pairing them with their wines at Clos de Apalta winery At Lapostolle Residence, using the products of their own organic vegetable garden, as well as fresh local produce markets in the area. Then your last winery is Viña Apaltagua. The story of Viña Apaltagua began in 1995, when the successful American businessman Edward Tutunjian was on vacation in Chile and fell in love with both the country and its surprising wines. It was at that moment that he decided to invest in Chile, and acquired his first vineyard, La Pancora, located in the Seventh Region of Chile, in the prestigious Curicó Valley.

Afterwards, with the aim of increasing both the surface area planted, as well as the variety of grapes, a second property was acquired in Huaquén, located in the town of Curepto, in the Maule Valley, an area known for the excellence of its grapes. This vineyard was chosen for its climactic conditions, dominated by a large temperature fluctuation between day and night. Later, the Apaltagua Winery was incorporated into the company, located in the Sixth Region of Chile, in the Apalta Valley.

Valley in Colchagua, which is characterized for its excellent conditions for viticulture.

Later, land was purchased in the town of Pirque, in the Maipo Valley, where there is also a reserve with a home called the Hacienda de San Juan de Pirque, which is now the guest house of the winery, and is surrounded by a beautiful centenary park with a native forest, all of which are now recognized as part of our national heritage.

Finally, the estates of Palmilla (Colchagua) and Manantiales in San Antonio Valley were incorporated into the existing vineyards, transforming the company into a Multi-Valley Winery, with presence in five of the major wine-producing valleys of the country. This allows them to have diversity in the varieties and wines, due to the qualities that each Denomination of Origin provides. The consistent excellence of their wines has given them prestige and recognition over time, in the different international markets, which has been reflected in the most important wine publications in the world. In 2010, Apaltagua was the third most internationally award-winning Chilean vineyard. In 2011, the winery was granted 45 medals in international competitions and in 2012 it received 45 awards for its different wines, in countries such as the United States, Belgium, France, England, Chile and Germany, among others.   In 2013 the winery has already been awarded with numerous recognitions. We will do a private tasting of their great wines and then drive back to Santiago.

TRADITIONAL AND BOUTIQUE FACE OF MAIPO VALLEY
Undurraga and Odjfell wineries with Pomaire

We will drive to the west area of Santiago toward the Maipo valley, there we will visit the winery Francisco Undurraga was one of the pioneers in the Chilean viticulture and winemaking. In 1882 he acquired an agriculture estate 34 kilometers away from Santiago, in the province of Talagante where he planted vines which he had brought personally from Europe in lead capsules in order to resist the passage through the tropics. The first shipment were made to United States in 1903. At present Viña Undurraga exports its wine to more than 70 countries in the five continents. The gardens-designed by the renowned French landscaper Pierre Dubois, the modern vilification plant and the underground cellars go along with their traditions and style of wines  Then we will do  a great tasting of their wines and continue our exploring to the artisan’s village of Pomaire famous for its local pottery &  their local food for its organic growing. Here we will have a GREAT Chilean lunch and then walk along the local street full of people making art out of clay. After this shower of culture and good times we will visit the winery Odfell. Over 25 years ago, the pioneering Norwegian Armador, (ship owner) Dan Odfjell discovered and felt in love with a small corner of the famous Maipo Valley, Chile. Born of rain in Bergen, Norway, he could not resist the attraction of the austral sun in this Virgilian setting. Odfjell’s quest is to make wines that are a true expression of the terroir. Their low-yield vineyards are handled with individual care. They hand-pick the grapes in order to ensure the fruit arrives at the winery as intact as possible.

They started planting vineyards in their Maipo Estate in 1994. Today, after 20 years, they have 85 hectares planted in Maipo. Including their vineyards in Cauquenes, Lontué, and Colchagua, they have a total surface area of 115 hectares being cultivated, planted with a wide array of grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and old Carignan vines from Cauquenes.

Odfjell is committed to being a leader in progressive vineyard management, and they are dedicated to elevating the image and practice of viticulture in Chile. The goal of this work is to produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, while maintaining our long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental winemaking practices. For this reason, their vineyards are 100% organic and they have also recently begun biodynamic farming.

Armador Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 from Odfjell Vineyards just got 90 points in the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator, transforming this Chilean wine in one of the most awarded in the history of the Odfjell Norwegian shipowners winery.

Besides of the recent Wine Spectator score, add to this outstanding harvest the 92 points given by James Suckling, 91 points in Wine & Spirit, being part of the list of "Top 100 of the Year" and at a local level, 92 points in the guide 'Descorchados' written by the renowned journalist Patricio Tapia. We will visit the installations and experience their wines overlooking the view of the Maipo valley, then we will take you back to Santiago .
